If you are already familiar with the HEART© Coaching Methodology, you are well aware that it is an acronym consisting of the 5 components that form the foundation of this methodology: Holistic, Empowerment, Acceptance, Resilience, and Transformation. This article is about the first key factor of HEART©, Holistic. By this, we mean the Holistic Lifestyle that has become increasingly popular in recent years as people seek a more comprehensive approach to personal growth and development. Holistic coaching is what helps us achieve this Lifestyle.

What is Holistic Coaching

Holistic coaching in general is an approach to coaching that considers the interconnectedness of various aspects of an individual’s life. It recognizes that a person’s well-being and success are influenced by multiple dimensions, including physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual aspects. In holistic coaching, the coach works with the client to create a balanced and harmonious life by addressing all these dimensions.

Holistic coaches typically consider a wide range of factors that can impact a person’s life, such as relationships, career, health, personal values, beliefs, and aspirations. They help clients gain a deeper understanding of themselves, identify their strengths and values, and align their actions and goals with their overall vision of a fulfilling life.

Holistic coaching may involve various techniques and methodologies, depending on the coach’s training and expertise. These can include mindfulness practices, visualization exercises, goal-setting strategies, energy work, and techniques from other modalities such as psychology, positive psychology, NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming), and spirituality.

Overall, holistic coaching aims to support individuals in achieving balance, fulfillment, and growth in all areas of their lives, promoting a holistic and integrated approach to personal development.

The Holistic Life Approach

This approach became the first component of the HEART© Coaching Methodology because it has been linked to very positive effects to a decrease in stress, anxiety, and depression, and an increase in overall well-being. The coach works deeply with the client to envision the “Who” and their Well-Being Routine (see figure underneath) around the aforementioned 4 levels of awareness and well-being; The Physical, The Mental, The Emotional, and The Spiritual. “Who” the client “is” or wishes to become, which daily habits, routines, thoughts, behaviors, emotions, and feelings specifically need to work on, change, and develop, so that they become the best version of themselves (physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually). Once this is achieved and emerges in full awareness then it is time to develop the “How”. “How” they can reach the desired result, what plan they need to come up with, what actions steps they need to take, how they will be accountable, and what would their support tools and mechanisms be to achieve the “How”.

Scientific Research on Holistic Life

Over the years, there have been a lot of research and studies in order to prove the benefits of such a lifestyle. A systematic review published in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine in 2015 found that a holistic approach that includes mind-body interventions, such as meditation and yoga, can lead to reductions in anxiety and depression, and improved well-being.

Another study published in the Journal of Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine in 2016 found that a holistic approach that included acupuncture, nutrition, and lifestyle interventions led to significant reductions in stress and depression in patients with chronic pain.

Finally, a meta-analysis published in the Journal of Psychosomatic Research in 2017 found that a holistic approach that includes mind-body interventions, such as meditation and yoga, can lead to reductions in symptoms of anxiety and depression, and improved quality of life in patients with chronic medical conditions.

Conclusion

Overall, these studies and research demonstrate the positive effects of a holistic approach on decreasing stress, anxiety, and depression, and increasing overall well-being, highlighting the value of the H component in the HEART© Coaching methodology.
